Welcome to breathing space, I’m Jayne Cox, a UK based Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) Practitioner and Coach.

With a therapeutic background spanning over two decades and the lived experience of cPTSD and nervous system sensitivities, I have spent many years researching the most effective and innovative treatments for stress, anxiety related disorders and burnout that are available. I offer the SSP to you based upon the results of my own research. I am here to help you feel safe and well.

“If you want to improve the world, start by making people feel safer”

A little more about me

I am a UK based trauma, polyvagal theory, neuroscience informed Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) Practitioner and Coach. I am amongst the first SSP providers in the UK specialising in helping you to understand and care for your nervous system. Supporting your journey from an anxious, fearful, stressed or a shutdown state to one that is calmer, more able to feel socially connected, regulated and resilient.

About SSP

The SSP is a powerful clinical grade listening programme that is delivered and supervised by a qualified professional with care, compassion, and client safety central to its effectiveness.

The SSP is delivered to each client based upon what we understand about their unique nervous system, acknowledging sensitivities they may have and considering their life experiences. There is no need to dwell on the past or spend many sessions talking about difficult experiences, which can cause the triggering of distressing experiences and emotions from the past.

In the very simplest of terms the SSP helps us to live, and to live well. Defensive, fearful and anxious people are unable to reach and truly live to their full potential. The SSP offers safety so that we can feel less reactive, shifting anxious states more swiftly, to feel more comfortable and emotionally and calmly connected.

Contrary to what you might think, people living with fear and anxiety can appear very busy, always on the go and successful. This inability to stop and pause to smell the roses can lead to dis-ease and unexpected burnout.

This is the reason I continue to choose to provide the SSP and use it to support my personal wellness. The results really do speak for themselves, and it continues to be developed by Dr Stephen Porges and the team at Unyte Health, from a place of deep caring and compassion.

The SSP can help you to find your breathing space.

The SSP is delivered digitally using an app, and is suitable for those using both iOS and Android devices. I deliver the SSP remotely, so you can be in the comfort of your own surroundings, without the need to travel and using video conferencing platforms, such as Zoom, or we can Skype etc. I will also use email and text to supervise and support this process.

Allowing the time and space for supervision and completion of the SSP is vitally important, so please consider this before you start to contemplate undertaking the SSP Programme with me.

You will also need to have ongoing access to a quiet and safe environment for your 1:1 sessions with me and for your SSP listening and the use of over the ear headphones, with the ability to turn noise cancelling off.

Delivery of the SSP is carefully assessed through an intake process and supervised throughout your listening. It may be delivered over a period of 6-8 weeks or several months, depending on your unique situation. Creating a safe, comfortable relationship is the first step of the programme and then comes the sound. We work to Stephen Porges principle, that less is more, so please only consider the SSP if you can commit to the time and the process.

SSP Connect: The entry level pathway of the programme allows you to familiarise yourself with the listening experience and can be used as a stand-alone programme for general soothing and calming, when used alongside other therapies, practices or coaching. The SSP Connect has a carefully selected full spectrum playlist that is calming and regulating to the nervous system and for those continuing onto the SSP Core pathway, it allows you to develop a listening routine around your day to day activities and for us to develop opportunities to co-regulate together. It also provides an ongoing sense of comfort, safety and regulation, during the SSP Core pathway listening.

SSP Core: The most advanced part of the programme, accessed through an intake session, this playlist is the most powerful, potentially therapeutic and progressive, with the listening experienced in sequence and becomes increasingly dynamic as the programme continues. You will need to listen with over the ear headphones, and without noise cancelling on, to access the benefits of this programme.

SSP Balance: This part of the programme is optional and lighter than the Core and can be used in a variety of ways. We may use it to extend the benefits of the SSP Core, increasing and deepening the benefits gained form the SSP Core. It can also be used as a pathway to shift states more easily and help with ongoing regulation, once the SSP Core has been completed. The SSP Balance is our ‘home exercise programme’ for the nervous system, and we may adapt this accordingly, to suit your situation. It is also the preparatory step for times when you may benefit from a ‘booster’ of the SSP Core.

How does the SSP work?

The SSP uses our ear’s auditory system, and the act of listening to the specially filtered music to regulate our nervous system. This helps take us out of fight or flight and freeze or shutdown states, and into a more calm and comfortable state, known as rest and digest.

Who is the SSP suitable for?

Life is fast paced, and we are bombarded with often inescapable demands for our time and attention, from the moment we get up to the point we turn off the light to try to sleep.

Add to this, our unique life experiences with the potential for trauma in our history, and it’s hardly surprising that according to the Global Anxiety Alliance, anxiety disorders form the most common type of mental illness globally. (Penninx, Pine, Holmes and Rief, 2022)

The SSP can be beneficial to adults and adolescents who live with anxiety, in fact this is one of the most common enquiries that I receive. It can also increase your ability to learn and retain information and support you and your therapeutic journey.

The SSP can also support the following:

  • Stress
  • Pain and IBS
  • Auditory sensitivities
  • Lack of focus and concentration
  • ADHD and Neurodivergent Individuals
  • Trauma symptoms
  • Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
  • Social connection and emotional challenge
  • Lack of motivation and poor decision making

The body of evidence supporting the benefits of the SSP is constantly growing, with research ongoing, please contact me to discuss your situation.

How do I start the process?

Because I work remotely I am here to listen and help you to feel safe, wherever you are living in the world. Your enquiry, by my contact form, email or phone, is treated with respect and the strictest confidentiality and when and if you feel ready, we will arrange a complimentary 20 minute call on the telephone or a video call is sometimes possible. I can answer your questions and if we both feel comfortable, we can arrange an SSP assessment. You can also ask your therapist or healthcare professional to refer you to me, and I can also help you to connect with a professional to support you during the SSP process and continue your therapeutic journey beyond the SSP.

If you are a therapist or healthcare professional and would like to include the SSP in the treatment plan for your patients/clients or make an SSP referral, please do contact me.
